We’re excited to announce two new additions to our 2017/18 Spring Season! Welsh National Opera Orchestra and tenor Gwyn Hughes Jones join us for a concert on Saturday 14 July, and on Saturday 4 August Aurora Orchestra make their debut appearance at the Hall, performing a symphony from memory.
Gwyn Hughes Jones joins the WNO Orchestra for an evening of operatic highlights, programmed to feature the very best of the tenor voice alongside this extremely versatile and well-regarded ensemble. Orchestral overtures and interludes share the programme with arias from Puccini (including Tosca and Manon Lescaut), Verdi (Aida), Bizet (Carmen), the particular operatic favourite Vesti la giubba from I Pagliacci by Leoncavallo, the Mario Lanza classic Because You’re Mine and maybe the odd Neopolitan song! This promises to be a dramatic and delightful way to spend a summer evening.
In August, Aurora Orchestra will be performing Shostakovich’s ninth symphony as part of the Cambridge Summer Music Festival. Principal Conductor Nicholas Collon and BBC Radio 3’s Tom Service will break down this awe-inspiring work, using musical excerpts from the instrumentalists to guide us through the structure and main themes in an interactive presentation, before the orchestra performs the entire symphony from memory. Aurora Orchestra’s direct and communicative performance style is sure to appeal to die-hard classical music fans and newcomers alike!
