Piano Day - 29 March, 2025

World Piano Day, celebrated on the 88th day of the year to honour the 88 keys of the piano, is a global event that unites music lovers everywhere. This special day celebrates what is often called ‘the king of all instruments’. On Saturday 29 March, Saffron Walden joins the worldwide celebration with its own unique festivities. This town-wide event, dedicated to the piano, offers various inspiring performances and opportunities. With performances from Brad Kella (winner of Channel 4’s The Piano), Martin James Bartlett (previous BBC Young Musician of the Year winner), James Beckwith (award-winning jazz pianist and composer), a screening of The Pianist at Saffron Screen, and open piano sessions at Saffron Hall and Audley End House, there's something for everyone!

Brad Kella at Saffron Walden Town Hall (1pm & 2pm)

Brad Kella, winner of Channel 4's The Piano, joins us at Saffron Walden Town Hall for a truly unique performance. Known for his heartfelt and inspiring story and a playing style praised by global phenomenon Lang Lang himself, one of today’s most celebrated pianists, Brad brings his remarkable talent to life in two intimate performances. Don’t miss this free event on Saturday 29 March with 20-minute performances at 1pm and 2pm. Prepare to be moved and inspired!

Martin James Bartlett (4pm)

Join us for an afternoon of piano classics with acclaimed pianist Martin James Bartlett at Saffron Hall at 4pm, hailed by Nice Matin as ‘not only a prodigy of the piano but an accomplished artist who counts among the greats of his generation’. Winner of the 2014 BBC Young Musician of the Year, Martin offers a programme that showcases the piano's extraordinary range of expression. Highlights include works by Gershwin and Ravel, brought to life with profound drama and passion. Martin will introduce the repertoire from the stage, making this an engaging experience for all, whether you’re familiar with the classics or new to them. Expect iconic works by great composers such as Bach, Schumann, Debussy, and Schubert, brought to life by one of the most exciting pianists of his generation.

'The Pianist' at Saffron Screen (7pm)

Oscar winning film The Pianist will be shown at Saffron Screen (7pm). During WWII, acclaimed Polish musician Wladyslaw faces various struggles as he loses contact with his family. As the situation worsens, he hides in the ruins of Warsaw in order to survive. 2003 winner of three Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Director. 2003 winner of two BAFTAS for Best Film and Best Director.

Jazz Club at Saffron Walden Town Hall (8pm)

Award-winning jazz pianist and composer James Beckwith returns to Saffron Walden to take the stage at the Town Hall at 8pm for a memorable performance. With a career highlighted by acclaimed shows at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club and collaborations with top-tier artists, James brings his unique blend of innovation and artistry to this special event. Enjoy a relaxed evening of jazz with unallocated seating.

Open Piano Sessions (10am-4pm)

Would you like the chance to play a Steinway – the Rolls-Royce of pianos – for your family and friends in the impressive setting of Saffron Hall, following in the footsteps of the world’s greatest pianists, or the piano in the grand library of Audley End House, or indeed our piano in the Saffron Hall foyer? Join us on Saturday 29 March between 10am-4pm where, as part of our Piano Day, we will be offering open piano sessions. You’ll have 10-20 minutes to showcase your talent. If you don’t want to play but still want to join in the fun, you’re welcome to come along as an audience member, whether you’re supporting friends and family or just enjoying the performances!
