Soloist, conductor and concerto partner: violinist Joshua Bell appears in all three roles with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields – the ensemble of which he is music director. His concert includes Dvořák’s lyrical Silent Woods with cello soloist Stephen Isserlis, and Beethoven’s Symphony No 8 – a work full of light hearted musical jokes and good humour. Bell then joins forces with Isserlis for a climactic performance of the Double Concerto by Brahms, a powerfully emotional late work which was intended as a gesture of reconciliation towards the composer’s estranged friend Joseph Joachim. The programme also features a curiosity in the form of the second movement of Schumann’s Violin Concerto, with an added codetta by Benjamin Britten. Reworked as an Elegy in memory of legendary British horn player Dennis Brain, it was discovered by Isserlis in the Britten archives and has not been performed since 1958.

This concert will finish at approximately 9.10pm
