Britten Sinfonia & The Sixteen

Britten Sinfonia & The Sixteen

Presented by Saffron Hall

The Britten Sinfonia during a photoshoot.

Saffron Hall’s brand new Resident Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia is joined by The Sixteen to open their 2016-17 season. A typically illuminating programme from Britten Sinfonia places a new work by James MacMillan in context with music from Tallis to Vaughan Williams.

For James MacMillan, ’beauty is at the heart of our Christian faith’ and his new Stabat Mater is sure to be profoundly shaped by his beliefs. But this is a work with deep roots and a universal message; placed next to hauntingly emotional music by Tallis, Vaughan Williams and Britten, the Stabat Mater becomes a celebration both of tradition and of radical renewal.

James MacMillan’s Stabat Mater has been commissioned by the Genesis Foundation for The Sixteen.

This concert will finish at approximately 9.30pm

Pre-concert event 6.15pm: Composer James MacMillan joins the talented young musicians of Britten Sinfonia Academy on stage for a performance of Britten’s Suite on English Folk Tunes and James MacMillan’s One.

Britten Sinfonia Coach from Cambridge: For this concert, Britten Sinfonia are organising a coach to and from Cambridge. The coach will depart from Queen's Road Cambridge at 6pm for Saffron Hall and return to Queen's Road Cambridge following the concert.
