Cavalli La Calisto
Cavalli’s La Calisto is the Venetian opera par excellence. Saucy, fun and bubbly, it follows the twin romances of gods Jupiter and Diana with the nymph Calisto and the shepherd Endymion. Inevitably, comic misadventures arise from their thwarted attempts at seduction, and many colourful characters play their part on the way.
La Calisto has turned quite a few heads over the years. Its combination of scandalous behaviour together with its heady score still draws as many gasps now as when it premiered in 1651. For memorable tunes and the light-hearted humour of a classic romantic comedy with just the right amount of naughtiness thrown into the mix, look no further.
ETO’s new production is conducted and directed by Timothy Nelson and features Paula Sides in the title role.
