Beyond Cantaloupe

It’s Friday night - so come and unwind in the unique atmosphere of the Saffron Hall foyer, with its cabaret vibe, lively bar and sizzling street food. Plus, of course, the special Saffron Hall ingredient: great live music from Simon Brown Quartet's ‘Beyond Cantaloupe'. Tickets sell fast, so be sure to book early – then join us to get the weekend off to a truly swinging start!

Beyond Cantaloupe formed in 2012 to explore and celebrate the music of Herbie Hancock, focusing particularly on the music he recorded with the Blue Note label in the 1960s. This period encompasses well-known compositions such as ‘Watermelon Man’, ‘Cantaloupe Island’ and ‘Dolphin Dance’, but the band also bring to light less-frequently performed tunes such as ‘One Finger Snap’, ‘A Tribute To Someone’ and ‘Speak Like A Child’. Herbie’s material from this period readily provides a sophisticated yet accessible programme to appeal to most jazz enthusiasts, ranging from hard-swingers, through to ballads, blues and bossas, while Simon’s commentary provides light background information about Herbie and the decade he spent recording with Blue Note.
