Music for the Maze Festival

Music for the Maze Festival

Presented by Saffron Hall

Singer Ranjana Ghatak grew up with classical Indian vocal music but has evolved a style of her own that reflects the styles and experiences she has developed living in London. For the Saffron Walden Maze Festival performance at St Mary’s Church, Ranjana performs new material developed with bass player Liran Donin, which they premiered together at the 2016 Bath Festival.

Ranjana has always had an interest in sacred geometry and finding the connections between the material and spiritual world. She visited a labyrinth in California last year whilst going through a transformational time that has shaped a lot of her writing and explorations in her music making with Liran.

About the performers

Singer Ranjana Ghatak has performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Nitin Sawhney and Akram Khan, Human Beamings, Katie Ryan and Opera Shots the Royal Opera House. As a composer, she was commissioned by the Commonwealth Games to write a piece for Big Big Sing and has written for dance and children’s theatre.

Bassist Liran Donin arrived in the UK from Israel in 2000, initially to study at Middlesex University, and subsequently to build a career as an in-demand session player, composer and producer. Best known for his work with Mercury-nominated jazz quintet Led Bib, he also performs in a diverse range of contexts, from the folk music of Northumbrian singer Rachel Unthank to free improv alongside vibes player Corey Mwamba, Arun Ghosh and singer Namvula.

St Mary's Church

This concert takes place at St Mary’s Church, an ancient and beautiful place of worship at the heart of Saffron Walden. One of the largest parish churches in Essex, the building dates mainly from the fifteenth century.
