Paul Lewis
Paul LewisPresented by Saffron Hall

Paul Lewis’ brand of elegant, stylish musicianship has always embraced different musical epochs.
Here, he draws contrasts and connections in an imaginative programme that spans nearly two hundred years. Mozart’s refined, crystalline purity and the ravishing textures and improvisatory freedom of Poulenc may seem worlds apart, but these two master pianists are linked by a rule-breaking ingenuity, delight in musical mischief-making, and brilliantly idiomatic writing for their own instrument. Mozart’s twists and turns catch us off guard, his stormy minor-key sonata looks to Beethoven and beyond; Poulenc pays affable homage to Schubert amongst his perky, tender, irreverent miniatures; there may be more that links them than first appears. Debussy’s bittersweet keyboard tone poem provides an atmospheric musical bridge.
