Saffron Walden Choral Society with Britten Sinfonia

Saffron Walden Choral Society with Britten Sinfonia

Presented by Saffron Walden Choral Society

Saffron Walden Choral Society and Britten Sinfonia will perform a programme of 20th century British music.

Britten’s dramatic cantata, Saint Nicolas (1948), celebrates legendary incidents in the life of the patron saint of children, seamen and travellers. The chorus, with the conviction of eyewitnesses, tells how Saint Nicolas quelled storms during a sea passage to Palestine and saved the lives of the infamous 'pickled boys'. Nick Pritchard will reprise the role of St Nicolas, which he sang at the Aldeburgh Festival this June.

Edmund Rubbra’s Inscape (1964) is a beautiful melodic setting of four poems by Gerald Manley Hopkins. This performance presents a rare opportunity to hear this neglected composer’s music.

Saffron Walden Choral Society is grateful for the support of the Vaughan Williams Foundation and Saffron Walden Town Council for this concert.
