Mozart’s Solemn and Confessional Vespers, written for the Archbishop of Salzburg in 1780, are scored with trombones, horns and trumpets. The soaring and calm soprano solo ‘Laudate Dominum’ complements energetic and animated psalm settings.

Haydn’s Theresienmesse of 1799 is more intimate, featuring mellow clarinets and horns. Written for the name day of Princess Marie Hermenegild (wife of Haydn’s patron Prince Esterhazy), it soon became linked with Empress Maria Theresa of the Two Sicilies. This late work is imbued with the composer’s cheerful confidence in his Catholic faith. The East Anglia Chamber Orchestra also perform Mendelsohn’s evocative Hebrides Overture.
