Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs playfully recreate hymns – including the Shaker Simple Gifts – and songs of American folk tradition.

Leonard Bernstein in his Chichester Psalms brings jazzy, tuneful, and urban musical idioms to settings of six psalms sung in Hebrew. By combining Hebrew texts and Christian choral traditions in a commission for the Chichester Festival, Bernstein was implicitly issuing a plea for peace in Israel during a turbulent time in the young country’s history. Samuel Barber arranged the Agnus Dei text to his sublime and uplifting Adagio for Strings. American songs to make you smile!
