Presented by Saffron Walden Symphony Orchestra

Saffron Walden Symphony Orchestra playing on the stage at Saffron Hall

The SWSO are delighted to welcome back Alex Redington, leader of the Doric String Quartet, to perform Shostakovich's mighty Violin Concerto No.1. We open with the March from Prokofiev's opera The Love for Three Oranges. These are full of wit, sarcasm, and absurdity.

Written in 1947-8, Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No.1 was premiered by dedicatee David Oistrakh in 1955. In four movements, it is a monumental work. We close with Rachmaninov's exuberant Symphony No.3, written while he was in Switzerland. This is considered to be his most 'Russian' symphony, full of rhythm and energy.
